Dedicated home cinema

A room built only for films, with controlled light, acoustic treatment, a projector, a large screen and seating placed for the best sound. Our guide what is a dedicated home cinema? explains what it takes.

Media room or living-room theatre

Most Mumbai homes can't give up a whole room, so we make the living room work twice. In the Chhabra Residence, a 4K ultra-short-throw projector drops from the ceiling on a lift and a 120" Screen Innovations motorised screen comes down in front of it: a lounge by day and a cinema by night.

Hidden home theatre

In-wall and in-ceiling speakers, concealed racks and screens that disappear, for homes where the interiors come first. The ocean-front Walkeshwar apartment has exactly that.

Multi-zone audio and hi-fi

Music that follows you from room to room, and two-channel hi-fi for serious listening, with brands such as RBH and Harbottle. Lighting, shades and climate can join the same system through our home automation work.

Dolby Atmos home theatre design for Mumbai apartments

We design for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D. Atmos adds height channels, usually in-ceiling speakers, so sound moves above you as well as around you. Mumbai apartments bring their own challenges: low false ceilings, glass walls, odd room shapes and little space for equipment. Here's how we've handled them in real homes.

Finding space for the AV rack

In a Mahalakshmi high-rise, we joined midway through the interiors. The first decision was where the central AV rack would go so it stays ventilated and easy to service.

Bass in a lively, untreated room

Hard floors and glass make bass boom. In this Mumbai high-rise, we measured the room with miniDSP and used the Rythmik subwoofer's parametric EQ until it blended cleanly with the in-ceiling speakers at the 80 Hz crossover.

Long, narrow living rooms

At The Pink House in Lokhandwala, the room was too narrow for side surrounds, so we placed them on the back wall facing forward and still achieved a convincing 5.1 sound field.

Converting a spare bedroom

In Theater 3005, in-wall speakers and subwoofers kept the floor clear, and in-ceiling Atmos speakers added height in a room that was never meant to be a cinema.

We recommend a speaker layout for your room's size, ceiling height and seating after the site survey, not from a fixed package.

Acoustic treatment and calibration

Even very good speakers sound ordinary in an untreated room, where reflections smear dialogue, so we plan acoustic treatment with the design. In Theater 3005, for example, GIK Acoustics diffuser/absorber panels sit behind acoustic fabric.

Once everything is installed, our certified team carries out HAA-certified audio calibration to fine-tune the whole system to industry standards, and ISF-certified video calibration of every display for accurate colour and contrast. On the Lower Parel duplex, that meant:

  • a miniDSP UMIK-2 measurement microphone with Room EQ Wizard, and a miniDSP 2x4 HD for subwoofer calibration;
  • Dirac room calibration to get the best from every speaker despite the room's acoustic challenges;
  • ISF calibration of the JVC projector through a Lumagen video processor.

How a Mumbai home theatre project works

    Discovery call

    A 30-minute call to understand your space, how you'll use it and your design preferences.

    On-site survey

    Our acoustic designer visits your home to measure the room and finalise speaker, screen and seating positions.

  3. 3

    Design and quote

    A detailed 3D design, bill of quantities and timeline, so there are no surprises after sign-off. We coordinate directly with your architect or interior designer.

  4. 4

    Install and calibrate

    Clean installation with concealed cabling, followed by calibration, a walkthrough of the system and ongoing support.

Timeline: most projects take 2 to 8 weeks, depending on the room size, acoustic treatment, automation and product availability.

When to start: ideally before the false ceiling and interior work begin. That's when speaker positions, wiring and acoustic treatment can be built in cleanly. If your interiors are already done, we can still help: the Mahalakshmi project above was a mid-way retrofit.

  • Room type and size: a living-room media setup needs less than a dedicated cinema with its own acoustic shell.
  • Speaker layout: how many channels, including Atmos height speakers, and whether they are in-wall, in-ceiling or freestanding.
  • Picture: a large TV, or a projector with a fixed, motorised or acoustically transparent screen.
  • Acoustic treatment: absorption, diffusion and bass control, which grow with how ambitious the room is.
  • Seating, lighting and control: recliners, lighting scenes and one-touch control.
  • Stage of the project: designing before interiors is simpler than retrofitting into finished walls and ceilings.

Yes. We also take on retrofit projects in finished and occupied apartments, planning the wiring and equipment positions to keep disruption to a minimum.
