miniDSP

You can buy excellent speakers and still get boomy bass, muddy dialogue and one seat that sounds nothing like the next. Usually the room is to blame, not the speakers. miniDSP processors with Dirac Live measure what your room is doing and correct it, and that is often the biggest single upgrade a system can get.

The problem

Your Room Is Part Of Your Sound System

Every room changes the sound before it reaches you, and nowhere more than in the bass.

Room modes

Low frequencies are long enough to bounce between walls and form standing waves. At some frequencies they stack up into a boomy peak, and at others they cancel into a hole.

Bass peaks and nulls

A single bass note can be 10 dB louder, or almost missing, depending on the frequency. That's why some notes boom and others vanish.

Uneven seats

Because those peaks and nulls depend on position, the sofa's centre seat can sound full while the corner seat sounds thin or boomy.

Why expensive speakers still sound bad

A speaker is designed and measured in ideal conditions. Put it in a lively room with glass, marble and bare walls and the room's reflections and modes change what reaches your ears, whatever the speaker cost.

The solution

How miniDSP And Dirac Live Fix It

Measure first, then correct. No guesswork, and you can always switch back.

1

Measure

A calibrated USB microphone (miniDSP UMIK-1 or UMIK-2) records how each speaker and subwoofer actually behaves at several seats around the listening area.

2

Correct

Dirac Live calculates filters that correct both frequency response and timing, so the sound is balanced across the whole listening area, not just one spot.

3

Manage bass

miniDSP's toolbox sets crossovers, delays, levels and parametric EQ, so small speakers hand bass to the subwoofer smoothly (80 Hz is a common crossover point).

4

Integrate multiple subs

EQ alone can't fix seat-to-seat differences. Two or more subwoofers, each with its own delay, level and EQ, even out bass across every seat. miniDSP processors are built for this.

Who it's for

Is miniDSP Right For Your System?

Home theatre

Dedicated cinemas and media rooms with 5.1 or 7.1 systems that need room correction and bass management for every channel.

Typical choice: Flex HT / Flex HTx

Stereo and Hi-Fi

Two-channel systems, streaming setups and 2.1 systems where Dirac Live tightens imaging and tames room bass.

Typical choice: SHD series, Flex, DDRC-24

Multi-subwoofer systems

Rooms with two to four subwoofers, or an existing AV receiver whose sub output needs proper multi-sub tuning.

Typical choice: 2x4 HD, Flex Eight

Taming A Boomy Subwoofer In A Mumbai High-Rise

Living room in the Mumbai high-rise projectRoom measurement software running during calibrationLiving room with in-ceiling speakers

Living room · Mumbai · Gray Sound C40 in-ceiling speakers (x4) · Rythmik Audio L12 subwoofer

The challenge
In a Mumbai high-rise apartment, we installed four Gray Sound C40 in-ceiling speakers in the living room, along with a Rythmik Audio L12 subwoofer for the low end. The in-ceilings sounded great, with a large soundstage and good off-axis response. In this lively, untreated room, though, the subwoofer was boomy and too punchy, and the stereo amplifier had no EQ or tuning options.
What we did
We measured the room with a miniDSP UMIK microphone and used the measurements to make targeted parametric EQ adjustments on the Rythmik subwoofer.
The result
The result: the subwoofer now blends with the main speakers through the 80 Hz crossover. There's no more boomy echo, just tight punch that doesn't ring on in the live room. Small, measured adjustments made a big difference.

FAQ

miniDSP Questions, Answered

What is miniDSP, and what is Dirac Live?

miniDSP makes digital signal processors, DSP amplifiers and measurement microphones. Dirac Live is room-correction software from Dirac Research that runs on many miniDSP processors, built in or as an optional upgrade. It uses microphone measurements to correct frequency response and timing in your room.

Do I still need acoustic treatment?

Ideally, yes. Treatment controls reflections and reverberation, and DSP corrects what's left, especially in the bass. They work best together. In living rooms where heavy treatment isn't practical, miniDSP and Dirac Live make the biggest difference.

Can miniDSP work with my existing AV receiver?

Yes. A common setup puts a 2x4 HD or Flex Eight between the receiver's subwoofer output and up to four subwoofers, so each sub can be tuned individually. For a full processor upgrade, the Flex HT or Flex HTx takes multichannel audio over HDMI eARC or USB.

Does the Flex HT decode Dolby Atmos or DTS?

No. The Flex HT and Flex HTx accept multichannel linear PCM (over HDMI eARC or USB) but don't decode Dolby or DTS bitstreams, so your TV or source must send PCM. We'll recommend the right processor for your formats.

Does miniDSP support Dirac Live Bass Control?

Currently only miniDSP's Tide series supports Dirac Live Bass Control (the Tide16 is available for pre-order on our shop). Other miniDSP processors can still optimise multiple subwoofers using per-output delay, level and EQ, with tools like REW and Multi-Sub Optimizer.
